Greek néon, new — element-name (atomic-number 10), discovered by William Ramsay in 1898. The color refers to the deep red variety of hollyhock at full bloom: a saturated, slightly cool deep red with the matte finish of large mallow-family flowers. Deeper than rose, cooler than coral.
