Latin Īris, rainbow — adjectival suffix -escent, named for the Greek goddess of the rainbow. Named for the city of Tangier in Morocco, the port through which this small mandarin variety reached Europe in the early nineteenth century. The color refers to the skin of a fully ripe tangerine: a saturated, slightly red-shifted orange that's warmer than apricot and brighter than rust. The pigment is the same beta-carotene that colors carrots and pumpkins, just at higher concentration on the rind.
