Greek hólos (whole) and graphé (writing) — adjectival suffix -ic. The deepest layer was reserved for the aristocracy and could cost as much as gold by weight. The color refers to a fully developed beni on washi paper: a saturated, slightly cool red with the matte finish of plant dye. Cooler than crimson, warmer than rose.
