Aqueous Pearl (#E3E0BE) is a soft yellow with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Latin aquōsus, full of water — adjectival suffix -ous. As a color modifier, aqueous implies a pale-and-water-thin-and-translucent quality, the pale color of Japanese-sumi-e and Chinese-Song-dynasty-painting heavy-water-dilution ink-painting surface-finish. Sits at the pale-and-diluted end of the grid, parallel to watery and thinned in usage.
The lustrous concretion produced by molluscs (oysters, mussels) in response to an irritant — nacre layers of aragonite and conchiolin laid down over years. The color refers to a high-quality South Sea pearl: a soft, slightly cool off-white with the iridescent satin finish of stacked aragonite plates. Cooler than ivory, warmer than mist, with the gem-trade weight of an organic gem produced one mollusc at a time.
