Lush Loft Fuchsia

Middle English lush, possibly from lascious, lascivious — a word that drifted from sensual ripeness toward visual abundance. Used as a color word since the eighteenth century for the saturated greens of well-watered foliage and the deep saturated jewel tones of velvet upholstery. Used across the deep and bold buckets where the hue is simultaneously dark and vivid.

Old Norse lopt, upper-floor / sky. As a color modifier, loft implies an upper-floor-and-rafter quality, the visual register of Tribeca-and-SoHo-Loft Industrial-Revolution converted-warehouse exposed-rafter-and-cast-iron-pillar artist-studio surfaces under Mid-Century-Modern New-York-City artist-loft light. Sits at the modifier-and-place end of the grid, parallel to atrium and barn in usage.

The genus Fuchsia — South American shrubs named in 1703 for the German botanist Leonhart Fuchs. The color refers to the calyx and tube of a vibrant Fuchsia magellanica hybrid: a saturated, slightly cool deep pink-magenta with the satiny finish of a tubular hummingbird-pollinated flower. Brighter than rose, warmer than orchid, with the bedding-and-basket weight of a plant genus whose flowers gave English the most attention-demanding pink in the spectrum.
