Sturdy Sari Brick

Old French estourdi, stunned, reckless — drifted in English to mean robust, well-built. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as durable and unfussy — the working browns of saddle leather, the working greens of pasture wool. Sits in the bold-and-warm corner alongside robust and solid.

Sanskrit śāṭī, long-draped-cloth. As a color modifier, sari implies an Indian-sari-and-Banarasi-and-Kanjeevaram-silk quality, the visual register of Banarasi-and-Kanjeevaram-sari hand-Indian-sari-and-Banarasi-and-Kanjeevaram-silk Banarasi-and-Kanjeevaram-sari-and-Mysore-and-Bengal-cotton sari-and-Indian-sari surfaces under Banarasi-and-Kanjeevaram-sari-and-Mysore-and-Bengal-cotton Varanasi-and-Kanjeevaram-and-Mysore-loom Indian-loom-light. Sits at the modifier-and-textile end of the grid, parallel to kimono and haori in usage.

Fired clay, mineral red. The color refers to common building brick — iron-rich earthenware kilned to the specific dusky red-orange of a Victorian terrace, a Roman aqueduct, an adobe wall in New Mexico. Less saturated than ruby, warmer than burgundy, with a chalky cast that reads as architectural rather than decorative.
