Refreshing Chartreuse
Refreshing Chartreuse (#DBEFAB) is a soft lime with a pastel character. It reads calm and airy, with enough chroma to feel intentional rather than washed out. Its HSL profile (78°, 68%, 80%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary indigo. Old French refreschir, to make fresh again — present-participle of refresh. As a color modifier, refreshing implies a clear-and-cool-and-revitalizing quality, the crisp color of Cornish-coast and Hebridean-island fresh-sea-air-and-cool-water revitalization. Sits at the crisp-and-cool end of the grid, parallel to fresh and bracing in usage.
The yellow-green French liqueur made by Carthusian monks at the Grande Chartreuse monastery since 1737, from a recipe of 130 herbs known to only two living monks at any time. The color is the base spirit chartreuse jaune in a glass: a saturated, slightly green yellow that's brighter than lemon and warmer than lime. The liqueur gave the color its name, not the other way around.
