Imperial Pond Rose

From the Latin imperialis, of the empire — applied to color since the medieval period for the hues reserved for sovereigns and empires: imperial purple of Tyrian dye, imperial yellow of Ming-dynasty porcelain. As a modifier, imperial implies saturation combined with the institutional weight of a color owned by a court. Sits in the bold-and-deep corner, alongside royal.

As a color modifier, pond implies a small-and-still-water quality, the visual register of village-green-and-farmyard duckweed-and-lily-pad-covered still-water small-pool reflective surfaces in rural English-cottage afternoon-light. Sits at the modifier-and-place end of the grid, parallel to mere and pool in usage.

The Latin rosa, the Greek rhodon, the Persian gul — every European language has a different name for the same flower and the same color. Rose covers the spectrum from blush to fuchsia depending on the cultivar, but in pigment shorthand it means a cool, slightly bluish red — the inside of a damask petal, the dye that washes out of madder root.
