Italian cavaliere, horseman / knight via Latin caballārius. Sits at the bold-and-chivalrous end of the grid, parallel to gallant and knightly.
From the medieval Latin scarlatum, originally a fine wool cloth rather than a color — the dye came later when the fabric was associated with the bright red of kermes-stained textiles.
