Old French bouterez, thrusting-mass — past-participle of buttress, derived from bouter (to thrust). Velveteen color refers to a Liberty-of-London Edwardian-period velveteen day-dress: a saturated, slightly cool deep magenta with the velvet finish of synthetic-dyed cotton pile.
