Armored Limned Rose

Old French armëure, armor — past-participle of armor, derived from Latin arma (weapons). As a color modifier, armored implies a saturated-and-armor-clad-and-defensive quality, the deep-rich color of medieval-knight full-plate-armor visible-and-formidable battle-presence. Sits at the bold-and-fortified end of the grid, parallel to ironclad and shielded.

As a color modifier, limned implies a fine-line-and-illuminated-manuscript quality, the visual register of medieval-illuminated-manuscript hand-painted-and-fine-line illuminated-manuscript-and-margin-decoration limned-and-illuminated surfaces under medieval-illuminated-manuscript scriptorium-light. The Latin rosa, the Greek rhodon, the Persian gul — every European language has a different name for the same flower and the same color. Rose covers the spectrum from blush to fuchsia depending on the cultivar, but in pigment shorthand it means a cool, slightly bluish red — the inside of a damask petal, the dye that washes out of madder root.
