Stately Calendula
Stately Calendula (#BE4703) is a true orange with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Etymology
An adjectival form of state, condition of dignity. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for the deep saturated jewel tones of formal ceremony — the deep blue of a robes-of-state, the deep red of a state-banquet velvet. Calendula officinalis, the pot marigold of medieval European herbal gardens — used as a saffron substitute in Renaissance kitchens and as a wound-healing salve in Victorian apothecaries. The color refers to a fully open Calendula flower: a saturated, slightly red yellow-orange with the matte finish of small ray-florets. Cooler than marigold, brighter than goldenrod.
