Earnest Cinnabar
Earnest Cinnabar (#BC0F03) is a true red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (4°, 97%, 37%) places it in the highly saturated band at a mid lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Etymology
Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. Sits in the bold-and-quiet corner of the grid, slightly less luminous than resolute and slightly less institutional than imperial.
Mercury sulfide crystallized in volcanic veins, ground into pigment for at least four millennia. The red of Pompeian frescoes, Chinese imperial seals, the carved cinnabar lacquerware of the Ming dynasty. Toxic to grind — the mines of Almadén in Spain killed slaves and convicts for centuries — and dazzling to behold: the brilliant scarlet that gave its name to a color and a warning to apprentices.
