Praetorian Calendula

Latin praetōriānus, of the praetor — adjectival suffix, referring to the Roman-Imperial elite guard-cohorts. Calendula officinalis, the pot marigold of medieval European herbal gardens — used as a saffron substitute in Renaissance kitchens and as a wound-healing salve in Victorian apothecaries. The color refers to a fully open Calendula flower: a saturated, slightly red yellow-orange with the matte finish of small ray-florets. Cooler than marigold, brighter than goldenrod.
