Spirited Fall Avocado

An adjectival form of spirit — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as animate and characterful. Spirited orange, spirited green: the implication is saturation combined with personality, a color that feels like it has agency. Sits at the bright-bucket center alongside lively and vibrant.

Old English feallan, to fall / autumn. As a color modifier, fall implies an autumn-leaf-and-harvest quality, the visual register of New-England-and-English-autumn deciduous-leaf-fall maple-and-oak-and-beech autumnal-orange-and-crimson surfaces under Northern-Hemisphere autumn raking light. Persea americana, the buttery drupe domesticated in Mesoamerica seven thousand years ago and named for the Aztec āhuacatl. The color refers to ripe avocado flesh just under the dark skin: a soft, slightly muted yellow-green with the warm undertones of plant fat. Earthier than pistachio, lighter than olive, with the recent kitchen association of a fruit only recently turned global staple.
