Torrid Wold Lime

Latin torridus, parched / scorching — sharing root with torrēre (to dry by heat). As a color modifier, torrid implies a saturated-and-tropical-hot quality, the bright color of equatorial-Saharan-and-Sonoran-desert mid-summer high-temperature surface-emission. Sits at the bright-and-warm end of the grid, parallel to scorching and fiery in usage.

Old English wald, forested upland. As a color modifier, wold implies a chalk-upland-and-grass quality, the visual register of Lincolnshire-and-Yorkshire-Wolds chalk-and-limestone open-upland sheep-pasture-and-arable rolling surfaces under big-sky Lincolnshire-Wolds open-country light. Sits at the modifier-and-place end of the grid, parallel to moor and heath in usage.

Citrus aurantiifolia and its key-lime cousin — small, intensely sour green citrus carried by Arab traders from Southeast Asia to the Mediterranean by the eleventh century, then to the Caribbean with Columbus. The color refers to the skin of a fully ripe Persian lime: a saturated, slightly yellow-shifted green with the matte finish of citrus rind. Cooler than chartreuse, sharper than sage, with the same chlorophyll the fruit loses if left to ripen to yellow.
