Latin refulgēns, shining-back — present-participle of refulgere, sharing root with fulgor (lightning). Pitta color refers to the dorsal-feather field of Pitta brachyura: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the iridescent satin finish of structurally colored feather barbs. The genus name comes from the Telugu pitta, meaning small bird.
