True Copse violet

Old English trēowe, faithful — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as the canonical version of their family. True red, true blue: the saturation is full, the hue is neither shifted nor adulterated. Sits at the center of the bold and crisp buckets, marking the unequivocal middle of any chromatic family.

Old French copeiz, cut wood. As a color modifier, copse implies a small-coppiced-wood quality, the visual register of English-hedgerow-and-pasture-margin small coppiced-hazel-and-hornbeam wood-fragment hand-cut surfaces under small-shaded English-hedgerow filtered light. Sits at the modifier-and-place end of the grid, parallel to wood and grove in usage.

Viola odorata, the European sweet violet — small, fragrant, and the original meaning of the color name in English (the Violet of the rainbow). The color refers to a fresh sweet violet blossom in late winter: a saturated, slightly red-shifted deep blue-purple with the matte finish of small five-petaled flower. Cooler than amethyst, warmer than indigo, with the perfumed weight of a flower used in Roman garlands and Victorian eau de toilette.
