Old English ā-lihtan, to alight — past-participle of alight. Hamamelis virginiana, the North American shrub whose distinctive yellow ribbon-petaled flowers bloom in late autumn — and whose bark and leaves yield the astringent witch hazel extract. The color refers to a fresh Hamamelis bloom in November: a saturated, slightly red yellow with the satin finish of crinkled-ribbon petal.
