Stately Garance
Stately Garance (#A11746) is a true red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Etymology
An adjectival form of state, condition of dignity. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for the deep saturated jewel tones of formal ceremony — the deep blue of a robes-of-state, the deep red of a state-banquet velvet. Sits in the bold-and-formal corner alongside imperial and royal, with slightly less institutional weight.
The French word for madder — Rubia tinctorum — and the dye that colored French military uniforms from the eighteenth century until garance was replaced by synthetic alizarin in 1869. The color refers to garance-dyed French wool: a saturated, slightly cool deep red with the matte finish of plant-and-mordant dye. The French equivalent of madder.
