Composed Inked Mulberry

The past participle of compose, to arrange together — used as a color modifier for hues that read as deliberate and balanced. Composed black, composed gray: the saturation is moderate, the hue is calmly positioned without aggression. Sits at the bold-and-quiet edge of the grid near settled and resolute.

Old French enque, ink. As a color modifier, inked implies a hand-inked-line quality, the visual register of medieval-and-Renaissance-inked hand-inked-and-pen-and-ink quill-and-iron-gall-ink hand-inked-and-pen-line surfaces under medieval-and-Renaissance hand-inked-pen-and-quill scriptorium-light. Sits at the modifier-and-texture end of the grid, parallel to limned and carved in usage.

The genus Morus — the white mulberry (M. alba) feeds silkworms; the black mulberry (M. nigra) bears the deep purple fruit that stains everything it touches. The color refers to a ripe black mulberry: a saturated, slightly red-shifted very deep purple with the slight juiciness of a compound fruit. Cooler than wine, warmer than indigo, with the agricultural weight of a tree that supported the entire Chinese silk industry for two thousand years.
