Old French tissu, woven-cloth — adjectival usage of tissue. As a color modifier, tissue implies a pale-and-thin-and-translucent quality, the pale color of Edwardian-period fine-tissue-paper gift-wrapping-and-archival-protection thin-and-translucent paper-finish.
