Etymology
Old Norse spik-spakr, spike-new — sharing root with spic-and-span. A nineteenth-century citrus hybrid, possibly a chance cross of mandarin and sour orange, named for Père Clément Rodier, the French monk who first cultivated it in Algeria. The color is the seedless skin of a winter clementine: a clean, slightly cool orange that's brighter than tangerine and softer than persimmon. The fruit ships in mesh bags from Morocco and Spain through the holiday season.
