Heroic Merlot
Heroic Merlot (#9B0A02) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (3°, 97%, 31%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary cyan. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Latin hēroicus, of a hero — derived from Greek hērōs. As a color modifier, heroic implies a saturated-and-monumental-and-victorious quality, the deep-rich color of Wagner-and-Sibelius late-Romantic-era musical-and-painterly heroic-mode. Sits at the bold-and-celebratory end of the grid, parallel to triumphant and valiant.
A Bordeaux red-wine grape — softer, fruitier, earlier-ripening than Cabernet Sauvignon, and the most-planted red grape in France. The color refers to a young Merlot from Saint-Émilion in a glass: a saturated, slightly cool deep red with the optical clarity of mid-tannin wine. Lighter than Cabernet, warmer than Pinot.
