Etymology
The progressive participle of dazzle, to overwhelm with brightness — used as a color word since the seventeenth century for hues that read as intense enough to be momentarily blinding. Japanese aotake — blue bamboo — the deep green of mature Phyllostachys bamboo culms before they yellow with age. Aotake-iro names this saturated green in Heian-period color vocabulary.
