Old Norse spik-spakr, spike-new — sharing root with spic-and-span. Named for the city of Tangier in Morocco, the port through which this small mandarin variety reached Europe in the early nineteenth century. The color refers to the skin of a fully ripe tangerine: a saturated, slightly red-shifted orange that's warmer than apricot and brighter than rust. The pigment is the same beta-carotene that colors carrots and pumpkins, just at higher concentration on the rind.
