Praetorian Burtuqāl
Praetorian Burtuqāl (#8C2A05) is a deep orange with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (16°, 93%, 28%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Latin praetōriānus, of the praetor — adjectival suffix, referring to the Roman-Imperial elite guard-cohorts. As a color modifier, praetorian implies a saturated-and-elite-and-imperial-guard quality, the deep-rich color of Roman-Praetorian-Guard elite-imperial-bodyguard scarlet-tunic-and-bronze-armor military-formation. Sits at the bold-and-formal end of the grid, parallel to spartan and imperial.
The Arabic word for orange — borrowed from Burtuqāl (Portugal), which introduced sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis) to the Mediterranean from East Asian sources in the sixteenth century. The color refers to fresh Arabic-grown sweet oranges: a saturated, slightly cool orange with the satin finish of citrus rind. The Arab-world's name for a fruit named for the country that brought it.
