Pallium color refers to a 12th-century Lateran-period papal pallium: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the matte finish of multi-bath Tyrian shellfish-dye on hand-spun ecclesiastical wool. The Latin word pallium also gave English pall and palliative.
