Even Set Sky

Old English efen, flat, equal — used as a color modifier since the medieval period for hues that read as uniformly distributed across a surface. Even gray, even tan: the implication is moderate saturation combined with optical uniformity. Sits at the crisp-bucket center alongside steady and balanced.

As a color modifier, set implies a sunset-and-descending quality, the visual register of clear-sky western-horizon sunset-and-moonset descending-celestial-body atmospheric Rayleigh-scattered Belt-of-Venus orange-and-violet surfaces under descending-horizon-and-sunset light. Sits at the modifier-and-time end of the grid, parallel to rise and eve in usage.

The blue of a clear sky at noon — produced by Rayleigh scattering, the preferential dispersion of shorter wavelengths through atmospheric molecules. Air itself is colorless; the color we see is sunlight scattered toward our eyes by every cubic kilometer above.
