Sturdy Shikon
Sturdy Shikon (#8557C6) is a true indigo with a cool character. It leans cool, sitting on the blue, green, and violet side of the wheel. Quiet and dependable, a fit for product UI and data visualization. Its HSL profile (265°, 49%, 56%) places it in the balanced band at a mid lightness. It works across type, buttons, and borders, saturated enough to feel deliberate but balanced enough to not fight the rest of the palette. Etymology
Old French estourdi, stunned, reckless — drifted in English to mean robust, well-built. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as durable and unfussy — the working browns of saddle leather, the working greens of pasture wool. Sits in the bold-and-warm corner alongside robust and solid.
Japanese 紫根, gromwell root (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) — the purple-root dye source for traditional Japanese murasaki and the medicinal-herb base for the eponymous shikon ointment used in burn treatment. Shikon color refers to a freshly harvested Lithospermum erythrorhizon root cross-section: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the matte finish of fresh root dye on hand-spun silk.
