Earnest Helleborus

#82269d
Notes

Earnest Helleborus (#82269D) is a true violet with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (286°, 61%, 38%) places it in the balanced band at a mid lightness. It works across type, buttons, and borders, saturated enough to feel deliberate but balanced enough to not fight the rest of the palette. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary green. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Earnest
adjective

Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. Sits in the bold-and-quiet corner of the grid, slightly less luminous than resolute and slightly less institutional than imperial.

Helleborus
noun

Eurasian Lenten rose (Helleborus orientalis) — an early-spring perennial with deep-violet five-sepalled cup-flowers that bloom against winter snow in mountain gardens from Greece to Turkey. Helleborus color refers to a fully opened Helleborus orientalis cup-flower: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the velvet finish of overlapping five-sepalled cup. The plant is poisonous and was used in Greek tragedy to drive Heracles mad.
