Old English murnan, to grieve — present-participle of mourn, sharing root with Old Norse morna. As a color modifier, mourning implies the deep-and-funereal-and-formal-and-Victorian-mourning-period black-textile quality, the dark cool-formality of widow's-weeds-and-funeral-procession. The fermented juice of unripe persimmons — used in Japan since the Kamakura period as a wood preservative, paper sizing, and textile dye. Kakishibu deepens with age and sun exposure to a rich brick-red on washi paper or fabric. The color refers to fully cured kakishibu on a sunblind: a soft, slightly muted red-brown with the warmth of tannin oxidation. Drier than rust, more orange than maroon.
