An adjectival form of state, condition of dignity. North American mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) — an Ericaceae evergreen shrub native to Appalachia, with cup-shaped pink-and-violet pentahedral flowers in late spring. Kalmia color refers to a fully bloomed Kalmia latifolia corymb: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the velvet finish of fused-petaled cup flowers around a tense ring of bow-loaded stamens. Named for Pehr Kalm, Linnaeus's Swedish-Finnish student-botanist.
