Cool Chrome
Cool Chrome (#81420A) is a deep orange with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (28°, 86%, 27%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary azure. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old English cōl, of low temperature — used as a color modifier as the complement to warm. Cool gray, cool blue: the optical impression of a slight blue-green shift, even within otherwise warm or neutral hues. Sits across the crisp, hushed, pale, and neutral buckets.
Lead chromate (PbCrO₄) — the chrome orange pigment introduced in 1809, brilliant but heavily toxic and reactive. Largely replaced by cadmium pigments in the twentieth century. The color refers to a freshly mixed chrome-orange in a Victorian color-merchant's stock: a saturated, slightly red orange with the matte finish of lead-based pigment. Brighter than ochre.
