Greek néon, new — element-name (atomic-number 10), discovered by William Ramsay in 1898. The color refers to a fresh celery rib in profile: a soft, slightly muted pale green with the optical translucency of high-water-content vegetable tissue. Lighter than pear, cooler than wheat.
