Bright Mossed Avocado

Old English beorht, shining, luminous — cognate with the German Bracht, splendor. Applied to color since at least the medieval period for hues that read as luminous: not just light in value but optically active, as if scattering more light back than a dimmer color of the same lightness would. Sits at the bright-bucket center alongside vivid and brilliant.

Old English mos, moss. As a color modifier, mossed implies a moss-covered-and-aged quality, the visual register of English-and-Welsh-mossed-and-lichen-covered moss-and-lichen-covered stone-and-tree-and-cobble mossed-and-lichen-covered surfaces under English-and-Welsh moss-and-lichen-covered atmospheric light. Persea americana, the buttery drupe domesticated in Mesoamerica seven thousand years ago and named for the Aztec āhuacatl. The color refers to ripe avocado flesh just under the dark skin: a soft, slightly muted yellow-green with the warm undertones of plant fat. Earthier than pistachio, lighter than olive, with the recent kitchen association of a fruit only recently turned global staple.
