Rugged Sumi
Rugged Sumi (#7C55ED) is a true indigo with a vibrant character. It holds its own as a focal accent, carrying visual weight without tipping into neon territory. Its HSL profile (255°, 81%, 63%) places it in the highly saturated band at a mid lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Etymology
Old Norse rugga, rough / coarse — adjectival suffix -ed. As a color modifier, rugged implies a saturated-and-rough-and-weathered quality, the deep-rich color of Scottish-Highlands-and-Norwegian-fjord outdoor-and-mountain landscape. Sits at the bold-and-weathered end of the grid, parallel to tough and sinewy in usage.
Japanese ink stick, made from soot of pine resin or sesame oil mixed with animal-glue binder, used in sumi-e brush painting and shodō calligraphy. Although nominally black, undiluted sumi on rice paper carries a deep blue-violet undertone.
