Old French riche, wealthy, abundant — applied to color since the medieval period for hues that read as plentiful in pigment. Roman cloak — and the medieval pallium of the Pope, a deep-violet wool stole worn as a Petrine symbol of papal authority. Pallium color refers to a 12th-century Lateran-period papal pallium: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the matte finish of multi-bath Tyrian shellfish-dye on hand-spun ecclesiastical wool. The Latin word pallium also gave English pall and palliative.
