Eclipsed Cochineal
Eclipsed Cochineal (#790346) is a deep magenta with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (326°, 95%, 24%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Etymology
Greek ékleipsis, abandonment — past-participle of eclipse. As a color modifier, eclipsed implies the deep occulting darkness of a celestial-body-blocked light-source, where umbral-and-penumbral shadows fall on the hue. Sits at the deep-and-cool end of the grid, parallel to occluded with astronomical connotation.
Dactylopius coccus, the Mexican scale insect cultivated on prickly-pear cactus and harvested for its deep red carminic-acid dye. Shipped to Spain by the conquistadors, cochineal became the second most valuable export from the New World after silver. The color refers to fresh cochineal pigment: a saturated, slightly cool deep red with the brilliance of a dye thirty times stronger than kermes.
