Etymology
Old English beald, brave, courageous — a quality word that crossed over to color in the late seventeenth century. Japanese for sprouting yellow — the yellow-green of Carex sedge sprouts and rice seedlings. The color refers to fresh moegi sprouts in a paddy: a saturated, slightly yellow yellow-green with the matte finish of small fresh leaves.
