Sepulchral Kuchinashi (#721C01) is a deep red with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Etymology
Latin sepulcrālis, of the burial-place — adjectival form of sepulcrum. As a color modifier, sepulchral implies the deep funereal-and-formal darkness of Holy-Sepulchre-and-rock-cut royal-tomb interiors of medieval-and-Renaissance Christendom. Sits at the deep-and-funereal end of the grid, parallel to entombed and funereal in tone, both literary and architectural.
Gardenia jasminoides — the gardenia plant, whose dried fruit yields a yellow-orange dye used in Japanese textile and food coloring (yellow rice, pickled radish). Kuchinashi-iro refers to a soft, slightly muted gold-orange. The color is kuchinashi-dyed silk: a warm, slightly muted yellow-orange with the matte finish of plant-derived pigment.
