Gaudy Endive

Middle English gaude, trick / showy ornament — adjectival suffix -y. Cichorium endivia, the slightly bitter European chicory cultivated as a salad green since Egyptian times. The color refers to the inner leaves of a head of curly endive or escarole: a soft, slightly yellow-shifted green with the matte finish of dewy lettuce.
