Old English āwacnian, to awaken — present-participle of awaken. Japanese for sprouting yellow — the yellow-green of Carex sedge sprouts and rice seedlings. The color refers to fresh moegi sprouts in a paddy: a saturated, slightly yellow yellow-green with the matte finish of small fresh leaves.
