An adjectival form of state, condition of dignity. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for the deep saturated jewel tones of formal ceremony — the deep blue of a robes-of-state, the deep red of a state-banquet velvet. Saccharum officinarum, the tropical grass whose stems are pressed for the world's sugar — cultivated since prehistoric times in Papua New Guinea and now grown across the tropical belt. The color refers to fresh sugarcane stalks at harvest: a saturated, slightly cool yellow-green with the satin finish of segmented grass culm.
