Etymology
From the Greek Styx, the river of the underworld — used as an adjective in English since the seventeenth century to mean infernally dark. Solanum melongena, the South Asian fruit cultivated in India and East Asia for over four thousand years before reaching the Mediterranean via the medieval Arab agricultural revolution.
