Old French plonger, to plunge via Latin plumbicāre (to weight with lead) — past-participle of plunge. Shikon color refers to a freshly harvested Lithospermum erythrorhizon root cross-section: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the matte finish of fresh root dye on hand-spun silk.
