From the Latin profundus, deep — sharing the same root as the noun profundity. As a color modifier, profound is the literary register for deep beyond ordinary measure — used for darks that read as bottomless or inexhaustible. Adonis annua, the small wild buttercup of European meadows — also called pheasant's eye — with single deep red flowers and dark centers. Named for the Greek mythological youth whose blood, in Ovid's telling, sprouted the flower.
