An adjectival form of state, condition of dignity. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for the deep saturated jewel tones of formal ceremony — the deep blue of a robes-of-state, the deep red of a state-banquet velvet. The Hindi word for green — used for the saturated lime-green of fresh hara dhaniya (cilantro), hara mirch (green chili), and the hara saag leafy-green dishes of North Indian cooking. The color refers to fresh hara dhaniya leaves: a saturated, slightly cool yellow-green with the matte finish of fresh cilantro leaf.
