Greek néon, new — element-name (atomic-number 10), discovered by William Ramsay in 1898. Apium graveolens, the marsh herb cultivated for its crisp pale-green stalks since at least the time of Homer, though the modern crunchy celery is a nineteenth-century selection. The color refers to a fresh celery rib in profile: a soft, slightly muted pale green with the optical translucency of high-water-content vegetable tissue. Lighter than pear, cooler than wheat.
