Frantic Fast Jade

Greek phrenitikós, frenzied — adjectival suffix, sharing root with phrenitis (delirium). As a color modifier, frantic implies a saturated-and-rushed-and-overactive quality, the bright color of Memphis-Group 1980s-design over-the-top saturated visual-rhythm. Sits at the bright-and-active end of the grid, parallel to frenetic and manic in usage.

Old English fæst, abstinence-from-food. As a color modifier, fast implies a Lenten-and-fasting-and-restraint quality, the visual register of Roman-Catholic-and-Eastern-Orthodox-Fast Lenten-and-Ramadan-fasting religious-fast-and-restraint austere surfaces under fasting-and-restraint austere ecclesiastical light. Sits at the modifier-and-time end of the grid, parallel to lent and vigil in usage.

Two minerals share the name: nephrite (a calcium-magnesium silicate, dominant in Chinese jade) and jadeite (a sodium-aluminum silicate, dominant in Burmese imperial jade). Both have been carved in China since at least the Neolithic. The color refers to high-quality apple-green jadeite: a saturated, slightly muted yellow-green with the waxy translucency of polished stone. Cooler than apple, warmer than mint, with the millennial cultural weight of yu, the stone of heaven.
